A Lighter Side of History: Traditional Teochew Kueh-Making Workshop with Yoon’s Traditional Teochew Kueh and Christopher Tan

Description
Synopsis
In this Mother’s Day special, learn about Teochew Kueh heritage and learn the essential skills for making traditional Teochew png kuehs during a demonstration and hands-on practical session led by a mother-daughter pair: Chef Müm Yoon, the Executive Chef of Yoon’s Traditional Teochew Kueh and her daughter Qara Yoon.

As you make the kuehs, listen to heartwarming stories of how Chef Müm Yoon progressed from just making kueh for her family to selling them via social media to kueh lovers across Singapore! You can also look forward to sampling her very own exclusive Yoon’s Signature Teochew Png Kueh, and a rare item – authentic Teochew Cikak Kueh, made with specially sourced cudweed, a fresh-tasting aromatic herb which grows around rice paddies and fields. Joining the dynamic duo as emcee for the day is food writer and cookbook author Christopher Tan, who will share about local kueh heritage and culture, and the importance of passing on family kueh legacies.

Limited spaces available. Enjoy a special discount if you come with your friend/parent or grandparent. Or make it a Saturday date with your mother or grandmother, for an early Mother’s Day celebration! This programme is suitable for all participants from ages 13 and above.

Price includes an exclusive Yoon’s Recipe Sheet, a plastic kueh mould, takeaway of png kuehs made and a 4R photo memento, compliments of Karyin Pictures Photography Studio.

This programme is held in conjunction with the exhibition Packaging Matters: A Story of Food Packaging in Singapore.

Speaker's biography
Nicknamed Chef Müm by her children, Mdm Lim Lee Hoi (Mrs Yoon), began her kueh-making journey as a teenager! Born into a Teochew family as the eldest sister to six siblings, and subsequently marrying into another Teochew clan, she was expected to take care of her siblings, husband, family and do all the household chores – including cooking. She always seeks to evolve and improve her kueh skills, ensuring only the best goes out from her steamer to her family and her fellow kueh enthusiasts!

Chef Christopher Tan is an award-winning writer, photographer, cookbook author and culinary instructor, whose original words, images and recipes center on food, culture and heritage.
